SUBMITTING YOUR MASTER’S THESIS FOR PUBLICATION AT UH HILO

The Edwin H. Mookini Library acts as a broker in submitting your thesis for publication by ProQuest/UMI.  The Library is not publishing your thesis – ProQuest/UMI is.  We accept your manuscript (electronic PDF files only, no paper), your completed forms, and your payment and submit them to ProQuest/UMI on your behalf.

MANUSCRIPT
Only manuscripts in the PDF electronic format are accepted.  The Library will not accept paper files.  If you do not have access to the Adobe PDF program, the Library can convert a Word document, but  please allow extra time to review the converted copy before it is sent to ProQuest.

ProQuest no longer accepts a signature page with scanned signatures.  If you wish to include a signature page, leave it blank with only the typed names of your committee on it.  If you wish, you can have your committee sign your personal copy when it arrives.  Signature pages with actual signatures are neither mailed to ProQuest nor scanned into the PDF manuscript.

FORMS
This is the webpage with the forms that you must fill out to submit with the electronic copy of your thesis.
The user name is dissertations and the password is publishhttp://www.il.proquest.com/dissertationagree

Very helpful and necessary information about how to fill out the forms and how to format your electronic thesis file are all on this webpage, too. Scroll to the bottom and click on the links for Guide 1, Guide 2, etc. Guide 1 (Preparing Your Manuscript for Submission to ProQuest/UMI) and Guide 4 (Open Access versus Traditional Publishing) are very important, especially because Open Access Publishing involves a high fee.  Be sure to read both very carefully before submitting your file and your forms.

FEES
The minimum fee you must pay is a $55.00 publishing fee.  This is for traditional publishing.  For this fee, you will receive one (1) hardbound 8.5 x 11 copy of your thesis, at no additional charge.  The Library will also purchase a hardbound copy and add it to our collection – you do not have to worry about providing a copy for the Library.

If you choose Open Access publishing (see Guide 4 on the webpage listed above) there is an ADDITIONAL fee of $95.00.  In other words, choosing Open Access publishing costs $150.00, not $55.00.  Again, you will receive a single hardbound copy to keep at no extra charge, and the Library also purchases a copy for our collection.

You own copyright on your work from the time of its creation.  You do not have to register copyright.  However, if you choose to have ProQuest/UMI register your copyright for you (as described in Guide 5 on the webpage listed above), it is another ADDITIONAL $55.00 fee.  Choosing to register your copyright does not affect the publication options you choose, and you will get your own copy for no extra charge regardless.

Fee scenarios:

Traditional publishing, 1 hardbound copy of thesis, NO copyright registration
$55.00
Open Access publishing, 1 hardbound copy of thesis, NO copyright registration
$150.00
Traditional publishing, 1 hardbound copy of thesis, WITH copyright registration
$110.00
Open Access publishing, 1 hard copy of thesis, WITH copyright registration
$205.00

All fees are paid - with cash or a check made payable to “University of Hawai’i” - to the Librarian who accepts your thesis file and forms.  You will receive a receipt for the fees and copies of all the forms submitted for your own records.

Additional copies of your thesis may be purchased directly from ProQuest/UMI, using the form provided on the webpage listed above.  Payment is submitted directly to ProQuest/UMI, not to the Library, and the copies are sent directly to you at the address you provide. You only need to purchase additional copies if you want more than the single copy you receive upon publication.
